A Shining Broken Pieces

I Want You to Know, I'm a Mirrorball

"I've never been natural
All I do is try, try, try."
           -mirroball, taylor swift

Have you ever heard of Taylor Swift’s song, “mirrorball” ? If yes, then you are now my best friend. This song is the 6th track of Taylor Swift’s 8th studio album “folklore” which beautifully explores the themes of vulnerability, reflection, and the desire to be seen. The song uses the metaphor of a mirrorball to symbolize how someone can reflect the emotions and desires of others, shining brightly in the spotlight while feeling fragile.

If you will listen to the song intensely, you will discover that the lyrics conveys a sense of openness and the willingness to be seen, despite the fear of being broken or not meeting expectations.

Are you a mirrorball?

Despite of being fragile, you keep shining brighter in order to be seen by everyone. Me, as the eldest daughter, I often carry a unique burden of responsibility. This role can mean being a caretaker, a mediator, or a guiding figure for my younger siblings.

Being an eldest daughter struggles to carve out their own identity separate from the role they’ve been assigned. They might feel like they’re constantly adjusting their personality and choices to meet others’ expectations, much like a mirrorball reflecting whatever light is thrown at it.
